Symbol Design

To make the most of this project I needed an effective design that I could use for both my semiotics project and print process.
I was aware that colour and simple shape were important factors for the symbol, this meant the design would cover all the different disciplines laid out in both briefs.

As the design began to take shape it was evident the use of type would balance the design, it took time to find an effective type to follow the strong lines and straight edges of my design.

I chose a blue colour scheme as it suits the demographic I am working for within my semiotics project. However within the the print process the experimental nature of the brief allows me to play with colour to gain different effects.

Colour theory

Colour is one of the most important aspects of Design theory allowing us to create mood, inform judgement, or even just get noticed.

Complimentary Colour

Complimentary colours are easy to understand, picking the hues directly opposite creates a good contrast. Each colour either has a warm or cool opposite.

Triad colour combinations

These are just an advancement on the complimentary colours use colours in thirds. The red, blue, yellow are primary colours and work effectively in children's design work.

Split complimentary

These are different than triads, although they, too, have three colors. For a split complementary, you take the two colours from each side of the colour wheel from the direct complimentary.

 Double Complimentary

Double Complimentary colour can be an effective way to use colour although it can over complicate Design.

Artist Research

 Pierre R. Renoir Dry point

Renoir born 1958 Monaco, worked on mainly metal using mainly Dry point techniques to develop very detailed portraits using line techniques and different strokes to create tonal qualities in the work.

As Dry point is a basic printing technique it is interesting to see technical involved method of using the idea. This shows an interesting way to show line use and varied stokes allows the implication of tone, shadow and basic perspective.

Mick Armson Lino Print

Mick Armstrong studied at Liverpool polytechnic and works as a freelance illustrator.  Armson has a passion for printmaking to coastal and urban landscapes aiming to convey a sense of movement through a moment in time.
The detailed line work and use of interesting colour draws the viewer in heavy line work is use to catch the eye in my opinion.
I enjoy the way the image allows you to almost move through the artwork with the use of perspective and also flowing lines.

Dan McCarthy Screen Print

The interesting use of bright colour and in depth meaning within McCarthy's really draws me in. Using simple screen printing techniques in really interesting way McCarthy can put the his message across in a striking manner.
Using the colours simple shapes and bold lines is an effective way to develop the semiotic ideas I wish to use within my symbol for this project.
